To be close to the patients, the hospital is close to the battle. The day Kenny Lyon was wounded, another Marine, Brad Folks, was hit by a", "start": 449.69, "stop": 455.81, "id": 80}, {"text": " roadside bomb. He's from West Virginia, a two-time state boxing champion,", "start": 455.81, "stop": 460.67, "id": 81}, {"text": " suddenly in the fight of his life the day before his 23rd birthday. Corporal", "start": 461.21, "stop": 466.45, "id": 82}, {"text": " Folks made it to the Army's 10th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad.", "start": 466.45, "stop": 470.67, "id": 83}, {"text": " Lieutenant Colonel Warren Dorelak flew in with a team just for Folks. Dr. Dorelak", "start": 475.43, "stop": 480.09, "id": 84}, {"text": " is chief of trauma at the Giant American Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany.", "start": 480.09, "stop": 484.27, "id": 85}, {"text": " He's one of the military's top doctors. He came himself because of Folks'", "start": 484.75, "stop": 489.39, "id": 86}, {"text": " condition. Folks lost a lung, his kidneys are failing, and", "start": 489.57, "stop": 493.75, "id": 87}, {"text": " half his body is burned.", "start": 493.75, "stop": 495.35, "id": 88}, {"text": " I think his overall prognosis just from his burn alone is actually very good.", "start": 495.93, "stop": 500.95, "id": 89}, {"text": " Even burn that extensively. Even burn that extensively. The problem with this", "start": 501.75, "stop": 506.97, "id": 90}, {"text": " patient is that he has a number of other severe injuries, the biggest being the", "start": 506.97, "stop": 513.57, "id": 91}, {"text": " problem with his one lung. We got to get him on this flight. As sick as Brad", "start": 513.57, "stop": 519.35, "id": 92}, {"text": " Folks is, Dorelak is moving him to Germany. The life support gear they're", "start": 519.35, "stop": 524.37, "id": 93}, {"text": " carrying is so advanced, some of it isn't even available in the United States", "start": 524.37, "stop": 528.33, "id": 94}, {"text": " yet, and at the same time Folks is flying to Germany, special medical teams from", "start": 528.33, "stop": 533.59, "id": 95}, {"text": " Texas and Maryland are flying to Germany to meet him. At what point do you say to", "start": 533.59, "stop": 539.43, "id": 96}, {"text": " yourself, we can't save this life? You know, we don't make that decision. We go", "start": 539.43, "stop": 545.71, "id": 97}, {"text": " full court press on everybody. That full court press starts with the quick", "start": 545.71, "stop": 550.57, "id": 98}, {"text": " response of these medevac helicopters flying emergency rooms. Staff Sergeant", "start": 550.57, "stop": 555.73, "id": 99}, {"text": " Danny Stevenson is a flight medic with the Army's 57th Medical Evacuation", "start": 555.73, "stop": 560.27, "id": 100}, {"text": " Company. Back on September 11, 2001, he was a staff medic at the Pentagon,", "start": 560.27, "stop": 566.17, "id": 101}, {"text": " treating the wounded. After 9-11, he asked the Army to send him overseas. They", "start": 566.51, "stop": 572.09, "id": 102}, {"text": " called you, you don't have backup. You are the backup. It's a lot of pressure, and", "start": 576.81, "stop": 580.53, "id": 104}, {"text": " I can handle that kind of pressure.", "start": 580.53, "stop": 582.29, "id": 105}, {"text": " Helicopter units like this one are spread out all over Iraq so that no injured", "start": 584.5699999999999, "stop": 588.89, "id": 106}, {"text": " man or woman is more than 20 or 25 minutes from their reach. It's all about what", "start": 588.89, "stop": 595.17, "id": 107}, {"text": " the doctors call the golden hour, that first hour after the injury when a Marine", "start": 595.17, "stop": 600.81, "id": 108}, {"text": " or a soldier can easily bleed to death. Speed is everything. The medevac", "start": 600.81, "stop": 607.33, "id": 109}, {"text": " helicopters are sometimes fired on, and there's always the possibility of an", "start": 607.33, "stop": 611.21, "id": 110}, {"text": " ambush on the ground. That same night, Brad Folks, the burn", "start": 765.33, "stop": 770.99, "id": 139}, {"text": " Marine from West Virginia, was loaded onto a C-17 cargo plane, rigged for", "start": 770.99, "stop": 776.07, "id": 140}, {"text": " intensive care, and bound from Iraq to Germany. He's improving. Actually,", "start": 776.07, "stop": 782.95, "id": 141}, {"text": " from the time we picked him up at the combat support hospital, slowly along the", "start": 782.97, "stop": 787.01, "id": 142}, {"text": " way, he's been continuously improving. Some patients sedated will never know they", "start": 787.01, "stop": 792.17, "id": 143}, {"text": " were on the flight. Others can't seem to leave their memories behind.", "start": 792.17, "stop": 795.99, "id": 144}, {"text": " The set up on these planes is a big innovation. Doctors have even", "start": 796.81, "stop": 800.99, "id": 145}, {"text": " performed surgery on board.", "start": 800.99, "stop": 802.71, "id": 146}, {"text": " In Vietnam, it took about 40 days for the wounded to get to the states. Back in the hospital, we found that nearly half of the", "start": 808.73, "stop": 814.57, "id": 148}, {"text": " patients aren't Americans at all. Many are Iraqi civilians, like this boy named", "start": 814.57, "stop": 820.11, "id": 149}, {"text": " Anas, who was wounded in a bombing, and this teenage girl who came in with a head", "start": 820.11, "stop": 825.51, "id": 150}, {"text": " wound. They took her to the CT scanner and found shrapnel had cut across her", "start": 825.51, "stop": 832.37, "id": 151}, {"text": " brain. There was nothing they could do for her but offer a last", "start": 832.37, "stop": 836.57, "id": 152}, {"text": " touch before dying.", "start": 836.57, "stop": 838.43, "id": 153}, {"text": " We found Anas a few days later, doing much better under the care of Dr. Adnan", "start": 844.63, "stop": 850.39, "id": 154}, {"text": " Rabi, an American who grew up in Iraq. It is very sad, actually, to see all of", "start": 850.39, "stop": 855.97, "id": 155}, {"text": " these casualties of war on innocent people. But that's a heavy price. This", "start": 855.97, "stop": 862.81, "id": 156}, {"text": " country is paying for peace and democracy. Worth it. I think so. And I went to him. He took me and said come, come. He put Immaculate and six", "start": 1407.89, "stop": 1412.85, "id": 255}, {"text": " other women in a tiny, rarely used bathroom in a remote corner of the house,", "start": 1412.85, "stop": 1417.49, "id": 256}, {"text": " hidden not only from intruders, but from the minister's large family. Immaculate and the other tall women sat with their backs", "start": 1422.99, "stop": 1427.43, "id": 258}, {"text": " against the wall. They pulled the smaller girls down on top of them.", "start": 1427.43, "stop": 1431.27, "id": 259}, {"text": " They couldn't all move at the same time. So when he took us in the bathroom, I", "start": 1431.69, "stop": 1435.87, "id": 260}, {"text": " was like oh my god, I will be saved here. This bathroom is so hidden that we're", "start": 1435.87, "stop": 1440.31, "id": 261}, {"text": " going to be saved. You thought this is salvation. Really? I couldn't. Seven women in this bathroom, three feet by four feet, for 91 days.", "start": 1454.25, "stop": 1460.33, "id": 265}, {"text": " They've been out of here for 12 years now, but being back brought back the hurry.", "start": 1461.13, "stop": 1466.01, "id": 266}, {"text": " Sometimes at night when they couldn't take it anymore, they retreated into this", "start": 1468.99, "stop": 1473.45, "id": 267}, {"text": " larger room adjacent to the bathroom. So show me how you would be when you were", "start": 1473.45, "stop": 1477.77, "id": 268}, {"text": " in this room. But it was more dangerous in here. Killers lurked just outside the", "start": 1477.77, "stop": 1482.37, "id": 269}, {"text": " window so the women couldn't stand up or talk. They were searching. They were", "start": 1482.37, "stop": 1486.73, "id": 270}, {"text": " there all the time. It was constantly intense, intense, intense. Several people", "start": 1486.73, "stop": 1491.95, "id": 271}, {"text": " had seen the Tutsi women arrive at the pastor's house, but no one had seen them", "start": 1491.95, "stop": 1495.97, "id": 272}, {"text": " leave. So after a few days, dozens of Hutus stormed the house, hoping to find the", "start": 1495.97, "stop": 1501.29, "id": 273}, {"text": " women and kill them. There's a little window in the bathroom.", "start": 1501.29, "stop": 1505.01, "id": 274}, {"text": " I went up and I looked through the curtains and I saw people running, running,", "start": 1505.77, "stop": 1511.05, "id": 275}, {"text": " running, inside the house. And I heard them. I can see the", "start": 1511.05, "stop": 1515.81, "id": 276}, {"text": " spears. They brought their spears into the house.", "start": 1515.81, "stop": 1518.09, "id": 277}, {"text": " In the house. I never been so scared in my life. I remember it was like life", "start": 1518.27, "stop": 1524.37, "id": 278}, {"text": " swept out of your body in a second. I became dry instantly. I couldn't even find", "start": 1524.37, "stop": 1530.35, "id": 279}, {"text": " saliva to swallow. Pastor Simi and Nahabi Manah showed us how he tried to divert", "start": 1530.35, "stop": 1536.43, "id": 280}, {"text": " the killers away from the women. He showed them other bedrooms and urged them to", "start": 1536.43, "stop": 1541.13, "id": 281}, {"text": " search his attic. And he was telling them, I send them away. Those girls, I send", "start": 1541.13, "stop": 1545.09, "id": 282}, {"text": " them away. They can help themselves. I don't want to be in trouble. The first", "start": 1545.09, "stop": 1548.97, "id": 283}, {"text": " time the killers came here to search your house, did you think they were going to", "start": 1548.97, "stop": 1552.63, "id": 284}, {"text": " find the women and kill everyone, including yourself? Yes, yes, I thought so.", "start": 1552.63, "stop": 1558.91, "id": 285}, {"text": " I thought that if they had seen them, they would have forced me to kill them or", "start": 1559.49, "stop": 1563.01, "id": 286}, {"text": " they would have killed me and killed them as well. Everything outside the bathroom, where Nirmakkale and the", "start": 1594.13, "stop": 1599.25, "id": 294}, {"text": " others were huddled, the entire country had become a killing field.", "start": 1599.25, "stop": 1603.51, "id": 295}, {"text": " Hutu's, along with Machete's, searched every house, every hill, and killed", "start": 1604.01, "stop": 1608.03, "id": 296}, {"text": " every Tutsi they could find.", "start": 1608.03, "stop": 1609.75, "id": 297}, {"text": " What prompted the genocide? There are things you can point to. The Hutus had long", "start": 1610.61, "stop": 1615.35, "id": 298}, {"text": "-standing resentments against the Tutsis who formed the nation's elite. Radio Rwanda broadcast calls day and night for", "start": 1619.33, "stop": 1624.69, "id": 300}, {"text": " the Hutus to go out and kill Tutsis.", "start": 1624.69, "stop": 1626.39, "id": 301}, {"text": " And the Hutus were told by their own leaders that if they didn't join the", "start": 1626.83, "stop": 1631.11, "id": 302}, {"text": " killers, they would join the dead. There are these things you can point to, but", "start": 1631.11, "stop": 1635.09, "id": 303}, {"text": " do they explain what happened? What could possibly explain what happened? Here's", "start": 1635.09, "stop": 1642.07, "id": 304}, {"text": " one explanation from one killer who'd been Immakale's neighbor.
